I'm currently using MJPEG with directshow or something to capture 720p, but the quality isn't that great. Is there something better?

  2. MJPEG can be very good if you set the quality level high enough. The files get rather large though.

For higher quality you can try HuffYUV or Lagarith. Lagarith may not be fast enough for 720p. HuffYUV may not compress enough.

You can also try Divx with constant quality encoding and short GOPs.

What is a good file size for 720p video?

For like a minute video of 1280x720, should it be around 30-50MBs?

  4. Uncompressed 1280x720, 60 fps, YUY2 video would be about 110 MB/sec. HuffYUV would probably cut that in half. Lagarith maybe 1/3. MJPEG will depend on the settings you use. At the highest quality setting it will probably turn out around the size of Lagarith or HuffYUV.
