I have the Sony BDP-s301 and it states in the manual that the player cannot play BD-RE's (strange because that is basically Sony's technology). I have had success making and playing AVCHD discs from mkv files on the Sony using TSRemux to author them as BDMV discs and then burning them on DVD-R's using Nero.

Sony players as well as others including PS3 should be able to play BD-R/RE burned movies if you burn with file sytem UDF 2.50 in Nero.

Folks at doom9 and cdfreaks now even discussing blu-ray to dvd backup using tsremux. http://club.cdfreaks.com/f142/bd2dvd-blu-ray-dvd-guide-232165/

I've successfully burned BD discs but I'd never thought to use Nero 8.

I'd be wary risking $25 blanks in Nero.
