So I was wondering are you able to author a ripped bluray movie as an hddvd? WHat about the other way around? How interchangeable are the codecs?

What I'm curious about is if both players support essentially the same codecs can you reauthor a movie without reencoding?

Or is this more like putting svcd on dvd where there is more conversion that is necessary? I know the dvd spec can handle vcd with just audio changes. Is this a similar process for hddvd and bluray?

Or are the two formats so structurally different that a full reencode is necessary? I mean I know you probably can't simply rip a full hddvd and burn to a blank bluray and expect it to work. But what about ripping just the movie and reauthoing to bluray? Can you simply plug in the movie only into a bluray authroing package without reencoding?

I'm interested in the real nuts and bolts differences between the two. I guess I want to know what really makes them different if the codecs are the same.

    Links are welcome. Thanks.

If you look at the max bitrate for Blu-Ray it's higher than the max bitrate for HD DVD. So if a movie were on Blu-Ray (and it used anywhere near the max bitrate) it wouldn't work for HD DVD. Maybe the other way around, though - HD DVD to Blu-Ray.

It's an interesting idea, though. Especially for all of us that have upgraded to HD - if the format we pick loses, maybe it could be easily reauthored to the winning format.

I reauthor HD Dvd to BD and burn them.Vc-1 and Mpeg-2 absolutely compatable with scenarist HDMV.Have a little problem with AVC,but I found a way to solve it.Discs play nice in first generation Sony BD player. In fact that is the only player that plays BD-RE and BD DL-RE,and I try all of them currently on the market.I hope new Pioneer BDP 95FD would play them as they promise.Did not do BD to HD DVD since there is no HD DVD burners on the market yet.

    Interesting. Thank you roman v.

@ j1d10t - that was kind of my thinking. If one kicks the bucket but you still have the discs than you could simly reauthor them without too much loss.
