Any opinions on these units?
Are they reliable? Do they have an fan? Can I open the case and replace the hard drive should the original drive fail?

I opened up a unit (smaller, 250GB) around a year ago. Opening it voids the warranty, but it was already past the warranty time. Lo and behold, it was a Western Digital hard drive inside that beautiful aluminum case.

Who knows whose drive they are shipping?
If I had questions like yours I'd choose a drive from an identifiable drive maker with their warranty and put it in a case which I knew the answers to my questions. Or buy an external completely packaged by a drive manufacturer. -
AND that is exactly what I've done in the past HOWEVER I can not get an hard drive and external case for the price Futureshop is selling the Lacie unit...

You are in Canada and I am not, but the price I see at Futureshop is not a great deal here in the US.
I guess hardware prices have not yet adjusted to the greater strength of the Canadian dollar
