on the upconversion dvd players/recorders, it upconverts normal DVDs to 1080 but does it upconvert tv signals such as cable or satellite signals(SD) to 1080 too when you run it into the up-player?

  2. No you need a HD cable/satellite box for that.

SD images running from cable on my Lite-On recorder look like crap. Because the Lite-On Tuner is crap. I use my VCR's tuner to feed the recorder.

If you are running through a tuner on your recorder there is a good chance that the tuner is crap.

An upconversion player recorder takes SD input and rescales it to fill the screen on a HD TV.

  6. You will see the best results with a HDMI cable. The component cable in most cases will not do the highest up conversion.
I once thought I was wrong

If you are running an RF input to the lite-on and using the Lite-on's tuner, either on channel 3 or changing channels, you image looks like crap because of the Liteon.

If your satellite receiver provides a composite video output (a/v) you can improve the picture by connecting that to an A/V input on the Liteon and setting the Lite-On's video source to that a/v port.

Lord Smurf and samijubal's experience is pretty common. An upconverting player will not help you. An upconverting recorder might but only if its tuner is better than the Lite-on's.

My TV upconverts pretty much anything, it does not have to be on HDMI input, no. I've got a pretty high-end Sony here.

  14. All HDTVs upconvert to their native resolution. I had a different TV before the Sony that wasn't very good quality, the TV still upconverted slightly better than the Toshiba recorder. It sounds like the Lite-On has poor quality progressive to me. Progressive should look far better than interlaced.
