    Hi,

Last week I bought a Sony HDD recorder, the RDR-HX750S. I'm very happy with it.
Someone asked me to repeat a video on a DVD for him, so I did.
But when he tried to play the DVD, he didnt read it, his Laptop neither.
So I tried the DVD at home, but it went fine. I tried it also in my Sony DVD Player, so not recorder. That went fine, and after that I also tried in my laptop, but it didnt work either.
So till now it only worked in Sony players.
I DID finalize the disk, so that's not the problem.

Does anyone now what to do?

    Thanks in advance

You most likely recorded in "VR" mode and not "Video" mode. Most recorders typically have two recording options, VR and video. The video option conforms to the dvd spec, VR does not.

    Ok thanks for your reply.

But I dont now exactly how to do this.

I've read the manual and there stood that you could format DVD-RW(only DVD-RW) to Video Mode.
Than there is an option in that disk setup, to format the disk to Video Mode or VR, but I cant select them even when there is a disk inserted.
So how can I turn the Video Mode on?

    PS. I use DVD+R disks

According to the Sony manual, you don't have a choice on the format when using +R discs. To make the discs playable in other players (as pointed out numerous times in the manual) the disc MUST be finalised.

If that doesn't work, the easiest thing to try would be a different brand and/or type of disc.

So I buy a HDD/DVD recorder from over $300,- and it cant make DVD's that are compatible with other DVD players than Sony?

And what brand or type disc would you prefer?
I'm not plannig to buy +RW or any - DVD's because they are more expensive.

This stands in the Users Manual on page 9 : Recordable and Playable Discs after DVD +R
Automatically formatted in +VR mode (DVD +RW VIDEO)
    ---
Playable on most DVD players (finalisation necessary) (page 36)

    I dont get this part:
Automatically formatted in +VR mode (DVD +RW VIDEO)

So it's automatically formatted in +VR mode, and after it it says VIDEO.

If it is really that I need to buy - DVD's or RW's to play them on another DVD Player, than I think I get an other HDD/DVD Recorder.

  6. Dvd-R recorded in video mode is the most compatible media. Dvd+R media is a close second. The manufacturer of the media is important. I have used brands that will play in my recorder and desktop computer but not a laptop. Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim are amongst the best manufacturers. Check if your recorder will record to the faster X16 media before using that.

Are you sure that ALL DVD players can play DVD -R?
Because I found a webshop with cheap DVD -R

Thanks for all the info btw ^^

  8. It is the most compatible media but it is not 100%. I bought some disks for $2.50/50 once just to test. The number of failures was high and many that did play had skips and stalls in the playback. A few worked fine. I used freeware dvdinfopro to check the data integrity of the ones that were skipping/stalling. The problems were not due to recording errors so I copied the fake TY disk onto a genuine Taiyo Yuden disk and it played perfectly. You might try dvdinfopro if you want to test the disks you have on your computer or want to id the manufacturer.

It is a matter of trial and error to find the brands/types of media that work in each player. Any player (especailly a Sony) will NOT play all brands and types of a disc (+ OR -). You need to research and experient to find what works best for your player. Even if you find out -R discs are the most reliable, that doesn't mean ALL -R media will work. You will then need to find which brands and/or lines work.
