Is it worth purchasing a video scaler? I currently have a Toshiba 47" LCD with 1080P alongside Toshiba HD-DVD A-20, Motorola HD set top box. Will I see a difference in quality? I have my eyes on the Gefen HTS video scaler.

  2. It depends on whether the stand alone scaler does a better job than the scaler built into your TV and/or cable box.

Unless your HDTV is very low end or a few years old, I doubt you will see improvement with a $400 scaler. Note that scaling and deinterlacing are two different subjects. Scaling is about interpolating more or fewer pixels with special attention to sharpening low motion images. Deinterlacing is a very complex process that needs to be adaptive to motion. Unless you are buying a very expensive pro model, the chips are most likely generic and similar to those used in current generation low end HDTV sets and upscaling DVD players.

Recent buyers of the Gefen boxes don't sound that impressed.
