I've got a huge amount of photos on my laptop I'd love to back up as a data dvd disk, and was wondering if it was possible to burn the dvd using my burner on my desktop computer, over the wireless network.
Is it possible? If so, can anyone tell me how to do this, and what software might do it? I shared the drive, then I experimented with Nero, but it couldn't see the network, it would only work on the local computer.
Thanks,
Hal

You 'could' burn over the network, but it would be much safer and easier to just transfer the photos to your desktop computer over the LAN and burn them from it's hard drive.
I've burned DVDs over my LAN, but it's a hardwired Gigabit system. I don't know how well your wireless can handle the data flow. If you use a program like Nero to burn, it's going to transfer the files to a temp file on your desktop hard drive anyway before it starts to burn.
What I did was open the remote folder with the video on my desktop computer over the LAN, then dropped the video into Nero as a CD-ROM (ISO). A DVD-ROM (ISO) would be the same. It cached the files, then began burning. As long as the buffer stays full, it should work.
You will have to be able to see the shared folder and file on your desktop computer before you can do anything. No extra software is generally needed.
For general networking problems, try the Network Wizard that should be part of your OS. -
Thanks redwudz. I continued doing research, and I saw that your suggestion was echoed in other locations. Thanks for the help!
