I recently acquired a movie that was encoded using xvid1.2 and dts 5.1. I have a new Macbook Pro and while the video plays and looks great the audio does not play at all. I've tried looking for a codec or just some information on playing back such a file for a while now, and have found nothing. I have VLC and I've tried all of the quicktime/AC3 audio codecs I could find with no success. Is it even possible to playback DTS on your computer speakers? What are the options out there for us Mac users? Thanks so much in advance.

I haven't looked into this myself recently. But apparently there's a patent dispute that led to VLC suspending DTS playback support until resolution of the issue.

I don't know if this is still the case, but your problems would seem to suggest that they are.
Perhaps others here have more current information?
