I am not to ofay with audio and its vanacular. So can someone tell me whether or not this mixer is any good for providing sound for small events. I have considered other mixers that were recommended before but I stumbled across this.
Alesis MULTIMIX-16FW
The mixer features 8-mono inputs and 4-stereo via balanced 1/4" TRS Phone inputs. ALT 3/4 outputs provide alternate signal routing to recorders, monitors etc. The Multimix-16FW features 8-microphone inputs with up to 50dB of preamp gain and Phantom Power (global switched). An Internal digital effects processor provides 100 preset effects and an easy to read display. Among the included effects are a variety of reverbs, delays, chorus effects and more.
Every channel features a 3-band EQ and 2 aux sends (switchable). PFL/Solo in place switches isolate signal on that channel with a single push of a button. Mute switches are featured on every input channel. The Mute switch disables the signal on a channel while simultaneously routing the signal to the ALT 3/4 output bus. Independent Main Mix and Alt 3/4 levels allow users to separately control the levels of the Multimix's two stereo buses.

I don't know the Alesis MULTIMIX-16FW and I don't see many reviews online.
It is a cost reduced copy (feature reduced?) of the industry standard Mackie mixers.
Mackie 1604-VLZ3 - analog interface
http://www.mackie.com/products/1604vlz3/
Onyx 1620 - IEEE-1394 interface

These will cost you more but retain resale value and have a strong user forum following.
A more well known line of low cost Mackie style mixers is Behringer Eurorack
