I get alot of PAL dvds from friends overseas.

They've played just fine in my all-regions DVD player (Philips DVP642) until now.

This latest batch i've received, I popped them in and the picture looks like it's been
    zoomed up.

Here's a screencap of what I'm talking about.

See how the music video's title cuts off on the left side of the screen?

I haven't touched the zoom button on the player's remote control or changed any settings
    within the player.

    It just does this.

Was it the way it was recorded on my friend's DVD recorder? He says that it plays just fine on his TV, fits the screen as it should.

Is there something on his end he can do to fix it so that I can get it in the right size?

With the DVDs I have now, is it possible for me to re-encode them? I tried to DivX the VOB
files from the DVDs and it stayed the same.

The dimension of the video is 720 x 576.

I read the Overscan thread and this seems something different.

    Hopefully, someone can help.

    Much thanks.

The dimension of the video is 720 x 576.
Are you *sure* of that ?????

Maybe I'm wrong, but it looks like the resolution of the clip is
352x576 and your SAP was not designed to handle half D1 properly.

The DVP-642 is a decent, cheap player, but it has been criticized a lot for its PAL to NTSC conversion. I know that many said that it can't handle progressive PAL DVDs correctly.

Are you REALLY sure the video is 720x576? Did you open it with IFOEdit to confirm this? You should be aware that in the USA, many DVD recorders change the video resolution to 352x480 for any recording made greater than 2 hours. I would not be surprised at all for a PAL DVD recorder to do the same thing and record at 352x576 for a recording greater than 2 hours. I also would not be surprised at all for the DVP-642 to have major problems with 352x576 video. I have this player and it's OK for a cheap player, but it's really not the best choice if you're going to watch a lot of PAL video.

    Here's a screencap from IFO:

Since all the PAL dvds i've gotten before i've worked just fine, I gotta think that it's the way it was recorded in the first place with those dvds that makes it not to wanna play correctly in my player.
