  1. I want to convert programs I've recorded to DVD, but I can't afford a DVD recorder. I've captured some VHS tapes and tried to convert them, but the quality is pretty poor. Some of the problem is the over-the-air/cable loss, but much is caused by the tape. I know that S-VHS's quality is higher, especially if they have some image stabilization, so I was looking to see how much one of those VCRs would be and I found this:

Will this help? Has anyone had any luck using S-VHS as source material? Can I get decent quality even in SLP (6hr) mode?

  2. I do use a S-VHS with a Digital Cable system, and both Capture with great results via VirtuarDub or MMC 7.5. I have done both standard VCd and SVCD. The price looks about right. Circuit City has S-VHS for about the same price.

I use SVHS for all my Television copies, and then convert to VCD. The result is very good. As for recording in the SLP mode, I wouldn't recommend it. It would be better than VHS, but why bother? The reason for buying an SVHS deck is quality, you might as well use it at the utmost.
As for going to DVD, It is one of the best options. The only other thing that would be better is a TIVO. Of course, the biggest obstacle is the signal itself. As long as you have a good signal, the hardest battle is won. BTW: Great price. I picked mine up 3 years ago for $250, but they have come down incredibly since then.
