Why can I record all shows on DVR but only transfer some to DVD? Robert

Just a guess, but sounds like a prohibition (Broadcast Flag: "Copy Never") included in the signal from your sat or cable provider. Search the forum archives here, as there are many discussions of this, as well as of add-on gizmos like a TBC or the Grex filter that are said to defeat this. Use keywords mentioned in this post for your search.

I appreciate your reply. The flag that appears says "Copy protected; Cannot record". I don't know if this means that I can record once, either to dvd or dvr or just to DVR. The DVR gives me no problem at all. It's when I try to burn a DVD that the message appears. I thought it was limited to HBO but I'm finding this on other channels. I have done what you said but I'm not sure this is what I need to overcome this problem. Robert

I have never tried to burn directly to a DVD and bypass the DVR. I just tried to do just that and several movies on HBO and IFC wouldn't allow me. The confusion remains why can I record on my DVR and not on a DVD and of course bypass this obstruction? Robert

Have you tried realtime dubbing to another recorder? Try it with something that blocks macrovision. I don't know if the flag blockers behave the same as macrovision. But cards like hauppauge 250 and others ignore macrovision and might work the same on dvrs with flag restrictions.

The only other way would be to do a search for hacks for your particular models. But I'd be wary about it and wouldn't do it if its a rented unit from your cable/satellite company. If its a standalone like a true tivo box that isn't a rental (aside from the subscription fee) then it might be something to look into. Though chances are it would void the warranty so see if you are beyond the warranty period and it might be worth it.

Thanks, Jedi Knight. I take it that you think the block is in my Scientific Atlanta 8300HD which is a rental and hacking it just won't do. What do you think about looking for hacks for my DVD recorder? I'm not sure that would resolve the problem if it's originating from the DVR. When you refer to "cards like the Hauppauge 250" are you refering to the card that slips into the slot on my cable box/ DVR? Robert

Sorry should have been more specific - I meant capture cards for your computer that record from other sources so you can make a dvd.

There might be hacks for your dvd recorder. Do a google or yahoo search and see whats out there.

Also look at what seeker47 said:

    Worth a look.

I assume you're talking about a standalone recorder? There are several threads about this. The newer recorders were forced by the studios to add protection for digital content recorded from ON Demand, HBO etc. If you are luck enough to have a 3 yr. old Panasonic ES10, pre-protection unit (like me ;>) you can record from HBO, DVRs and On Demand etc. I've made copies of Sopranos etc. for all my buds at work.

Thanks, Ricoman. Yes, I am talking about a stand alone DVD recorder ( LG F16GH, I think?). There must be a way to make mine record like they did in the Good Ole' Days. Come to think about it, I did have a Coby that burnt out and never gave me a problem burning DVD's. Robert

Some more info on this thread. I did a search on AOL and found another forum containing many complaints about my particular DVD recorder (LG DR1F9H). Seems that this model won't record from pay channels. This answers my question and I still am seeking a way around this. I checked the Grex but it's $80 and I'm not going there. Will try to copy and paste the postings from the other site to here to warn/inform any prospective buyers of the LG. Thanks, Robert
