I just bought a Samsung DVD V4600 Player. (If that matters). It came with a cable that has three plug-ins: red, white, and yellow on both ends of the cable. One end goes in the player. The other end is supposed to connect to the TV. However, my TV does not have three color coded slots. It only has two: yellow and white. When I plugged just those two in, the DVD player did not work. Is there another cable, that only needs, one slot, or is my TV just too old?

  3. Red & white are audio and the Yellow should be the composite video. If your TV set doesn't have AV (Audio Video) inputs you can buy a adaptor that the cables can plug into and then it will send it on channel 3 or 4 to the TV.

I believe Radio Shack sells them as one source. It is possible that your TV set could have S-Video instead of composite for video. Look next to the red and white plugs for a round plug with 4 holes and a rectangular hole for orientation of the plug. I can not understand why the TV would have audio jacks but no video. Unless they are for audio out?

Some details on the TV such as Make & Model may allow someone to be of further help.

This Google image search shows examples of teh S-video plug and socket. Note that it is a Image search, they both showed up on the top row for me.

The yellow is the (composite) video signal, the red is the audio right-channel, and the white is the audio left-channel. From your description, it seems that the TV doesn't have stereo sound in, but using the left-channel only (as you said you did) should have worked in mono at least. The ONLY other thing is, you'll need to switch the TV from "normal" channels to AV mode for it to read from the plugs - usually a separate button near the channel selector.

Or it's possible, as was the case on my Apex TV, that you need to toggle 'VIDEO' (on the TV's remote) for the alternate input source. This is the only way to have DVD's or my PlayStation2 show up on-screen, as the Video selector switches between CATV and Composite Audio/Video inputs.

    Cheers!

My $.02 adding to what others have said and summarizing . .
it appears you have a mono audio input (white) and composite video input (yellow) on your TV.
    1. pick up an adapter from the local Radio Shack to combine the signals from the red (right audio) and white (left audio) rca jacks to a single rca jack (mono audio). Plug that into the white connector (mono audio input) on your TV.
    2. plug the yellow connector (composite video) into the yellow connector (video in) on your tv.
    3. switch your TV to "video in" using either your remote or possibly a button on your tv to display the signals coming in via the rca jacks you just connected.
    4. play a dvd . . . .

    Welcome

Now without all the mess , it is one of two items you should buy .

A: An RF switch (requires one to get off butt to switch between different inputs)

Where : tandys , dick smiths , radio shack ...

An rf switch has both rca inputs , and ariel input on a single device , and a switch is used to switch between the different inputs as required ... very handy with older tvs without rca inputs .

Older nintendo , and some playstation one consoles came with these .

B: A simple rca cable suitable for such requirement (for couch potatoes)

    Where : tandys , dick smiths , radio shack , bigW , hi-fi centers , betta electrical ...

This cable has all 3 rca connectors on each end .

Yellow is seperate at both ends (video).

White and red is seperated on one end (gose into dvd player) , and combined at the other end into a single rca connection (gose into audio in on tv) .

Switch tv between modes tv / av ... its a button on the tv remote ... look for it .

This one would be the easiest to get hold of at any store .

There all you need in hardware , choose only one in required preference , between "get off butt" or "couch potatoe".

Note : If you go with an rf switch , you need to select an unused channel on the tv , and tune it in to pick up the dvd player while its playing a disc .
