Years ago, I recorded a bunch of avi files with a digital video camera of my toddler daughter who is now a teenager, and I recently re- discovered them on a disk. When I try to play them in anything ( GOM, WMP, DIVX ) all I get in audio without video. GOM tells me I need a codec for iv50 or something like that and gives me a download link, but even after downloading the codec, it doesn't work.
These videos are very important to me, can anyone tell me if they can be saved? Here is a link to one

    thanks!

The avi sample works in wmp after I installed
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/detail_desc.aspx?agr=&DwnldID=2846&ProductID=355

I can also open it in virtualdub then for editing and save as another format.

Thanks, I tried both methods and neither worked. Virtualdub says it can't locate decompressor for IV50. The other codec link installed but didn't help.

VirtualDub opens it and plays it(girl on a bed with posters on a door in the background - Britney Spears maybe). It plays in "spurts". It almost looks normal but on my version of VirtualDub it plays....slows a bit.....plays....slows a bit.....ect etc.
I'll save it as XVID for you now and upload it in a minute.

  7. The file is Intel Indeo 4 and it's 15fps, that's why it plays choppy.

Try using MPEG Streamclip to convert to AVI.

thanks, I wonder why virtualdub can't open it for me? I have 16 of these files totaling 149 mb.
I downloaded that file, you can delete it now, please.
My virtualdub is version 1.9.7 should it have all the right codecs?

    Deleted.
I'm pretty stupid when it comes to codecs myself. I have added some
over the years but wasn't really sure what i was doing.

    GOT IT!!
It's because I have Vista, I found this info on another forum...

You can get Intel Video to play in Vista with the following registry changes. Microsoft includes the decoders in Vista, but has them deactivated from the factory. Note that this will only work playing the videos on a lcoal hard drive, not a network share.

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32]
    “vidc.iv31”=“ir32_32.dll”
    “vidc.iv32”=“ir32_32.dll”
    “vidc.iv41”=“ir41_32.ax”
    “vidc.iv50”=“ir50_32.dll”

Thanks to everyone who helped with this, I appreciate it!
