MS has killed it off, and arranged a takedown of all the mirrors. Shades of MV knocking off RIPIT4ME and FixVTS. If there is any surprise here, it would be that this did not happen sooner. Phuck Yu, MS !!! Eat Shit & Die !

I just found out, in the course of checking to see if there were any releases later than the July '07 ones. There were a full set of August releases, which I missed out on by several days. (If anyone has some alternate links for the 2K and XP ones, where the links and the packages are reliable, please let me know by PM. Posting 'em here might just be a shooting gallery scenario . . . . )

The AP developers say that the project might revive later on in some other form, but I'm kinda skeptical. I think there was at least one other non-MS, non-Windows Live Update alternative around, but I can't recall what it was, and doubt it had established the sort of track record -- for safety and general excellence -- that AP had.

Update: I thought to check at some of the major freeware / shareware repositories. As you may recall, some items like RIPIT4ME continued to be available for a long time at these (and may still be) even after they were killed off. At one of them, I found the last AP packages, but all I'm seeing are 15 hour estimated download times. I have a fast broadband connection, and that's just ridiculous, so I canceled the download. At another one, I found this disturbing thread about "unofficial" AP releases.

That sounds like the other one I was trying to recall.
