  1. Hi all

I have tried authoring my first DVD which is ripped from a 2 part VCD. I extracted the avseq.dat files and joined them on a line editor and exported using a DVD setting of PAL 25 fps, 720 x576 and a 8000 Variable Bitrate. The whole movie when played back was smaller than the TV screen - in other words a black border on all 4 sides and i had to use zoom x 2 to fill the screen border to border. The pel aspect ratio setting was 16: 9 . I remade the movie using a 4:3 PEL aspect ratio setting. Now there are two black bands on either side of the image but top bottom is filled out. What's going on ? How can this be corrected and what PEL ratio is to be used in general as a rule of thumb 4:3 ? or 16:9?

You don't have to reconvert VCD when making a dvd from it. I would just use tmpgenc dvd author, it can join the vcd mpg clips and author them as a standard dvd video.

Or are you doing any advanced editing that would require reconverting? If so what editor/converter are you using?

  3. I am using Womble Video Wizard DVD.
Does all DVD have to be of resolution 720 x 576 and around 8000 bitrate ?

I imported my dat file from the VCD into Womble and exported it as a DVD format using PAL, 25 fps and a resolution of 720 x 576 and a VBR of 8000 and PEL aspect ratio of 16/9 and later 4/3 saved it locally as a VideoTS folder but as i said in the earlier post i got a smaller image and later one with side bands when viewed on the TV thru a DVD player

How does one select the DVD output resolution if all PAL DVD formats are not not supoosed to be 720 x 576 ?

The only thing that is not DVD standard on a VCD is the audio, you need to convert from 44khz to 48khz. Not familiar with the tool you're using so i can't tell you how. See what is DVD on the top left menu.

Just extract the mpg out of the VCD (VCDGear) and author it as DVD with TDA or DVD-Lab (they take care of the audio upsampling). Reencoding and resizing will only further degrade what video quality a VCD may possess.
