  1. Can't figure this one out.

I ripped a DL movie the other day as my backup but it would not play in my TV set-top player. First time this has happened. It played on my computer and on another dvd player I have.

I kept trying and after three attempts managed to create my copy by burning the DL disk at 4x. Never had to do this before. It finally played on my regular DVD player.

I gave the first two I burned to a friend to try on his player and BOTH worked. This narrowed the problem down to my regular player. Or did it?

My friend gave me a copy of a disk HE burned on his DVD writer and IT would NOT play on my regular player.

I ripped his disk with RI4ME/DVD Decrypter/DVD Shrink, etc. and burned another one. No luck.
Also tried DVD Fab HD, latest version with no luck.

Finally, I tried a 4th type of media, an old Maxell 4X and burned it at that speed. Success!

Media tried that failed: Taiyo Yuden 8x and 16x. Never had a failure with these at ANY speed.
    Maxell 16x (my friends)

Media that Worked: Maxell 4x ( about one year old - I saved some)

Up until now, everything I've thrown at my regular player, a JVC which is about one year old, has played.
I've burned several types of disks and they all played well, as did disks my friend loaned me.

I'm burning with ImgBurn to a Pioneer 111D with the latest firmware update.

So, where do I start looking? Disks, burner, player, burning software......?

And I ripped and burned a disk successfully AFTER this all happened.

    Any suggestions?

Try to use Verbatim DL disk, lots of people say it together with TY is best media. I use ImgBurn for DL disks.

  3. Tinker: Ya, they were Verbatim DL disks. What a waste at the price we pay up here, eh?
The other disks were single layer, Taiyo Yuden and Maxell.

    Sorry man.
I buy my TY at http://www.blankdvdmedia.com/Taiyo_Yuden_DVD.php
    Even printer cartridges are good.
Verbatim at Business Depot at $4 a pop, you are wright there.
Mostly I use SL disk, but for compression I use DVD Rebuilder, good stuff, with CCE Basic (around $50). Result are good quality.
So far no problem with either one.

  5. Or, you can try here: http://www.blankmedia.ca/

I bought my first DL Verbatims here, but some kind soul posted about a sale at Future Shop at $24.99 for 20. I ended up buying 6. Even still, they are expensive and I don't like to waste the damned things.

A bit of a long shot, but the player where the disc didn't work, it wouldn't happen to be a Panasonic would it?

I had a similar issue with a backup DL DVD (Verbatim) using RI4M - played everywhere BUT the Panasonic. Did some searching, and found this over at Digital Video Forums:

    whole thread:
    http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=75869

IIRC, my issue was with both SL and DL backups.

Just something else to try. Also, from LightningUK and all the ImgBurn beta testers, while TY and Verbatim tend to be the choices for SL media, only Verbatim DVD+R DL seem to be the ones that work consistently.

    Hope that helps,
    Jim
