I have gone round and round with PAL conversions. Tried the patch method and got sea sick trying to watch the herk and jerk. Tried DVDSanta, yuck. Tried Nero Essentials 7 and still have the heavy stepping during action and pan scenes. I am gathering from this site that even the good encoders struggle to produce good results so I am considering getting a DVD player that will play both.

My Panasonic DVD-S35 player will play the PAL DVDs but it has a noticable vertical stretch. I am confused as to wether this is a result of my DVD player or the TV. I do not want to get a DVD player known to play both only to find my tv is doing the stretching.

If I can get a correct picture from a PAL compatible DVD player, I can manually record on my standalone to NTSC.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank You

I have a 60 inch HD Phillips PP9202. My other TVs are not high defintion, but I cant believe that there would be any change in the picture as they are all American made TVs. I could be very ignorant and wrong, but it seems to me that is has to do with the difference between the lines of resolution between PAL and NTSC. I'm just not sure if this DVD plays the DVD but does not covert the signal, or if it is converting but my TV does not handle the signal.

  4. Well if your tv is HD(i don't have one) i guess it has advanced settings something like an option for pal source/ntsc source try to read the notice.
Regarding what i know about tvs, all recent models, let's say all the models(from famous companieshilips, samsung etc...not the cheap ones) from the mid 90's 'till now, can read everything 50/60hertz sources.
What about on your computer? No V.stretch?

One of the best ... if not the best ... DVD player for PAL to NTSC would be the Oppo Digital DV-981HD model BUT you must use HDMI so this may or may not be a good fit to your HDTV.

However if your HDTV has HDMI then by all means get the Oppo Digital DV-981HD ... you will be happy.

As for the problem you are having ... historically speaking ... Panasonic DVD players have been capable of playing a PAL DVD but only by outputting a PAL signal. They have never been able to play a PAL DVD and output NTSC.

So in short the problem is probably the Panasonic DVD player.

    P.S.
If your TV does not have HDMI then get the Oppo Digital DV-970HD model. It is a bit cheaper but PAL DVD to NTSC will be the same quality as the more expensive DV-981HD when NOT using HDMI. In other words, the DV-981HD only looks better when using HDMI so if you don't have a TV with HDMI then you want the DV-970HD model instead.

    Thanks for the help guys.

FulciLives is correct. I bought a cheap insigna dvd player from best buy to check it out and it plays the pal perfect.

I should have just gone through the trouble of trying this first.

    Thanks again
