HDMI @ 1920x1080p if the TV takes it, 1920x1080i if not.

If you choose 1080p, the player does the inverse telecine.
If you choose 1080i, the HDTV does the inverse telecine.
Try it both ways from a TV film source (not progressive DVD) and see which does better.

The player will revert to 720x480p for commercial DVD.
You may want to change that to 720x480i if you want the TV to deinterlace TV clips.
Again try both ways and choose.

You see, it all depends on how good the TV is and what type DVD you want to play.

What would be the recommended or best settings for playing (R2) PAL DVD on a 1080p HDTV in general and Panasonic PZ85U in particular?

If you are talking about a PAL commercial disc I can't speak to region coding but all such disks will only play at SD resolutions. The HDTV will do the upscale to 1920x1080p. I haven't tested my 5992 yet with PAL discs.

So the player up-converts only NTSC and not PAL discs?

I think the player takes PAL 720*576 down converts to 720*480 then up converts to 1080.

There might be a firmware hack to make it true PAL DVD player.
