I have a Philips DVP5990 Upscaling DVD Player and I was wondering what some good picture/audio settings to use.

For what TV?

HDMI @ 1920x1080p if the TV takes it, 1920x1080i if not.
If you choose 1080p, the player does the inverse telecine.
If you choose 1080i, the HDTV does the inverse telecine.
Try it both ways from a TV film source (not progressive DVD) and see which does better.
The player will revert to 720x480p for commercial DVD.
You may want to change that to 720x480i if you want the TV to deinterlace TV clips.
Again try both ways and choose.
You see, it all depends on how good the TV is and what type DVD you want to play.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

What would be the recommended or best settings for playing (R2) PAL DVD on a 1080p HDTV in general and Panasonic PZ85U in particular?

There might be a firmware hack to make it true PAL DVD player.
