can i split a 4.5 hour hard drive recording to 2 disks? I could not find the option if i can. When i recorded it to one disk the quality was terrible. This dvr does not support dl disks Any ideals?

There is a split function. Read the manual. I did it once, while reading the manual.

would like to record on the RCA DRC 8030N Hard drive and then transfer the drive to a PC so that I can use VideoReDo to edit out commercials but when I attach the RCA DRC 8030N Hard drive to the PC, the PC bios recognizes the drive is in the system but Win XP Home (OS) does not display the drive letter or drive contents.

I also tried to use Partition Commander to look at the drive and it sees the drive but shows the entire drive as free space with no partition.

Does any one know how the drive is partitioned and what OS are they using??

Can you double check this for me? I have tried to use 'Split' but the option is only available for content recorded onto DVD. When I try to 'Split' content on an HDD recording the 'Split' option is grayed out and not available. I used to use this a lot on a previous RCA DCR8005N unit and it was a great feature.

I was wrong. I see nothing on the RCA.
I was apparently thinking of the Polaroid I briefly had.

Note to self: don't record anything too long.

See page 20 of the manual.

    In a nutshell,
Begin playing library title you wish to split.
    Press Edit on the remote.
    Last option is split.
At the point you wish to split the video, click on the split option.

Note that SmartRecord must be off to allow you to do this.

Kem, Your info didn't resolve the problem, but it pointed me to the solution and I'll detail it here for anyone else that might have the same issue. To watch something from the HDD, I always just select it from the Video Library and press "Play Title". I have never used SmartRecord so it was already set to 'no' so that wasn't part of the problem. After pressing "Play Title", I could press 'Edit' and move the the last icon to the right, but when I click it, 4 options come up, with the last being 'Split Title.' Unfortunately, it is grayed out and says 'Feature Not Available' when you click it.

But the solution is simple. You said ... See page 20 of the manual ... and the very last section there says ... 'you must first select "Play all chapters" in the video library title menu.' So it's as simple as starting with "Play All Chapters" instead of "Play Title."

    thanks for the help. BDT
