I hooked up a Sony RDR-GX330 DVD Recorder to Video 1 on my receiver (a Sony STR-DE898) and it will not receive any audio/video signals. It plays DVDs fine, but I cannot see or hear TV reception. So the DVD is outputting a signal OK, but not receiving one and passing it through.
I tested the receiver OUTS and they work fine through my VCR (I can see and hear the TV). I also tried using Video 2 and monitor out and even checked the cords but the DVD acts like it gets no signal. I also checked for any weird settings on the STR-DE898 and it seems to be set-up correctly.
Now get this... If I disconnect my cable box and have it go directly into the DVD, it works fine. I'm plugging in S-Video and RCA audio cords directly from the cable box to DVD. Signal from cable box to DVD OK, ---YET--- signal from cable box to receiver and then receiver to DVD = nothing.
Sony tech help chat was no help.
For cords, I am using an RCA pair for the audio and have tried both S-Video and a composite RCA for the video.
I'm baffled, anyone have any ideas? Do you think the DVD recorder is faulty?

I also own one of these Sony dvd recorder and I have a buzzing noise in audio at times and then sometime it clears up for a while. In recording on a disc I have found the pause function does not work when in the recording mode. Unable to pause while recording!!!! What a disappointment. No more Sony products for me.

Typically, there is only one output from a receiver, usually labeled "monitor". Most AVR's are designed to connect multiple inputs (cd players, game consoles, dvd players, Tivo, etc.) to a single output (TV) and allow you to choose which source you would like to see (on the TV) and hear.
If you plan on only recording TV broadcasting, then you best bet is to connect it like a typical VCR. Cable box into the DVD recorder, then out of the recorder to your TV (or AVR).Google is your Friend -
So you're connecting the cable box outputs to the inputs of the receiver? Let's just say it's connected to video 2
Then you're connecting the receiver video 2 outputs to the inputs on the DVD recorder and selecting video 2 as your source on the receiver? Let's just say it's connected to input 2.
You select input 2 on the DVD recorder and what shows on you're TV screen?
A blue screen?
A different cable channel?
Have you checked the selection options under the inputs to make sure you selected s-video?
Do you hear the cable signal through the receiver speakers even though you you are not getting a picture on your TV?
I don't understand this part of your problem:
"Now get this... If I disconnect my cable box and have it go directly into the DVD, it works fine."
If you disconnect the cable box and have it go directly into the DVD what is "It"? The receiver?
Any extra information you can give would be helpful.

Also I agree with Krispy that it is better to just connect the cable box directly to the DVD recorder and only connect the audio outputs to the receiver for your sound.
Unless you have a bunch of different video products, that you want to send into the DVD recorder using the receiver as the selector switch, I would say don't send the video into the receiver at all.
