  1. I will buid a new PC soon and I am wondering should I get 2 LG or 1 LG + 1 Pioneer. I r3ead that the Pioneer would give faster read speed.

I myself is using LG H10N and this is a very good drive. I installed a LG H50N for a friend and I found sme freeze frames in some movies we backed-up. I posed this question to the forum and it was suggested that I used lower burn speed, like 12X.

I know the H10N and H50N use different chipsets. Since I like H10N, I should get H42N becuase of the same chipset. So far, I saw only H50N in the stores (Toronto).

The last couple of reviews that I have read, indicate that all of the current drives are about equal. One drive may be better at reading DL discs, but another is better at SL or RW discs.

For the most part, if you've found a drive that you are happy with, then stick with it. And don't let the experience with the LG H50N influence your decision. There are too many factors that can contribute to a bad disc. If you want to know for sure it is a drive issue, install the drive into your machine for testing.

  3. My friend's PC, the one with H50N, has even more resources than my own PC in term of CPU, memory, etc. They are both installed as Master-IDE and we both use Verbatim 16X exclusively. Furthermore, we do not do much with the PC when we're burning DVDs.

Looks to me that this is a drive issue.

NewEgg shows an H42N for $30 plus shipping, but I'm unsure whether they ship to Canada.

I strongly suggest that you limit your LG consideration to Renassas chipset based units like the H42, or H10. There appear to be greater reported problems with the Masushita chipset units like the H50 and H22.

Bestbuy sells the H42 drives in the US, don't know about Canada.

After running MCSE on the firmware its as lovable and reliable as my H10N or 4163B, and wonderfully media tolerant.

my 2 cents is get a PIONEER 112 and LG H62. i don't think newegg ships to canada. if you have a BEST BUY in canada they have the LGH62L on sale right now and it's a renesas chipset.

  7. I just checked Besybuy.ca (Canada). They sell H22L and H54L, not H62. I also checked a few other local computer stores, they all sell H22 and H50.

BEST BUY also sells the retail version of the PIONEER 112D under the model number 1710. Only difference is the retail version you get software. Hardware is the same for both retail and oem.

My H22L will not read scratched discs that my friend's H11 will. Also, even my old Pioneer was a better performer for ripping discs than any of my LG units. That said, the LG works great with good quality discs like the Verbatim or Sony branded Taiyo Yudens. I'm quite happy with it.
