I must have missed something, but I am at a loss...
I captured (from miniDV) and edited NTSC video using WMM.
I encoded a *.m2v with HCenc. Checked it with GSpot & it said it was DVD.
Used VD to create a .WAV from the *.avi, then ffmpeggui to create a *.ac3 and an mp2 (tried it both ways.
Used DVDAuthorGui to author and create a *.iso image file.
Tried to burn it with Nero, but Nero complained I had a CD image. Checked with GSpot, and sure enough, Nero was right. I didn't know I had downloaded and installed CDAuthorGui!!
Where do I start looking??
Thanks to all

I don't do ISO's , I use GFD ' GUI4dvdAuthor, and just create the video_ts folder, then is use ImageBurn to create the DVD
but since dvdauthor will create vcd & svcd I would image it was in one of your settings,
what size was the completed file, did you create a 4 gig CD ISO
or was your finished ISO close to 700 meg in size -

I may have to give GUI4dvdAuthor a try. I sure couldn't find any place in DVDAuthorGui to change DVD/VCD/SVCD settings. Don't know what the size of the image was (I'm at work now), but it certainly was small, as it was only about a 3.5 minute clip of my friend successfully falling into the water while attempting to get up on waterskiis. I'm just testing the whole process before I burn a real DVD.

I'll try Imgburn, but yes, NeroVision will burn video DVD's. Thats how I formerly did it before I learned that the included encoder was sub-par. GSpot also told me the image was a CD-image, so the problem is upstream from the burn process. -
There are no vcd/svcd/dvd settings in DVDAuthorGUI. Nero is incorrectly assuming since it is 700Meg or less, that it is a cd image. Honestly, I have no idea how to fix that in Nero, since I have never used an ISO in nero before. I highly recommend IMGBurn for burning your ISO to DVD.

I don't think it's either's fault. Thing is, an "ISO" discimage file really (usually) just contains the 2048-byte UserData. Since this doesn't explicitly explain which "MODE" it's in, it could be either a CD or DVD. It just doesn't give enough information about it's contents.
A possibility for understanding the difference might be a parsing of the filesystem. CD would normally be ISO9660+Joliet, and DVD would normally be UDFv1.02+ISO9660. Of course there are variations, and both CD and DVD could conceiveably use a UDF bridge format, so even then it's too hard to tell. An app would then have to parse the contents and see if there was a "VIDEO_TS" folder, etc.
My guess is that when presented with a disc image in ISO format (and maybe also BIN/CUE for that matter), Nero will default to CD and ImgBurn will default to DVD format. Nero does correctly understand the difference between DVD and CD discimages when using its own proprietary NRG format, probably because it DOES have info in the file about MODE.

Sorry about that, gunslinger. I misread your post. I did take your suggestion to use imgurn (in build mode), writing directly to the DVD. It was pretty quick and painless. Thanks! Just for fun, I might see what it does with the original *.iso
Thanks also to Scott for your insight!
Unfortunately, my finished product is not what I had hoped for. Some of the faster motion is quite blocky, and even the relatively still portions don't seem that special. But I'm still very happy to have gotten through the process, and to have learned so much. I'll spend a bit of time playing with settings in HCenc, double checking my work, and encoding/autoring/burning the same clip with Nero so I have the basis for an apples to apples comparison. You just might hear from me again in a few days in a more appropriate forum (conversion?).
Thanks again to all. -
Blocky artifacts are usually the results of not having enough bitrate. DV, especially if shot handheld, should be given as much bitrate as you can afford, even if it means splitting the video across two discs to do it. 7500 - 8500 is reasonable for the video stream. At 8000 and over you can probably get away with CBR encoding, but under that you might consider 2-pass VBR encoding instead.
