    Hi,
    For compliance with other things like set top players and Media servers as well as iPod's and for ease of use from DVD I recommend Nero Recode, it isn't free but it's top notch. I've tried pretty much everything and for DVD work in particular I keep coming back to Recode.

    HandBrake is awesome. Video quality is excellent. Includes option for adding chapter points that work on iPod... and it's free.

    Jesterware DVD to iPod and iPod Video Suite are also excellent but aren't free.

    Nero Recode still won't encode h264 video at 640x480!
