I notice that HDnet is showing episodes of this old TV series in 16:9 format. Never having seen the DVD's of the series can anyone tell me if the DVD's are 16:9,being from the late 60's it's surprising to see this old series in 16:9

If it isn't pillarboxed, it is cropped. All our digital broadcasts are 16:9, but anything that was shot 4:3 originally is pillarboxed for broadcast.

Well, if they did, they prob cropped it from a greater than 1.33 AR source. Maybe it was from
a 1.66 source -- like "The Wizard of Oz" -- and widescreen'ed it. I've watch that on a bit
screen (widescreen) tv and it looks pretty darn good with virtually no desirnable odd shape
    or what-have you.

I think with 1.66 AR sources, you can get away with widescreening it with minor compremise
(cropping and reshaping) and pass as widescreen. I don't know. I mean, I haven't actually
try (test) this out -- by matting a widescreen pic and pasting a 1.33 AR vs. 1.66 AR on top --
and reviewing the attributes of what they did. Maybe someone with more energy levels than
I, can re-produce this scenario for us all, specially for how they did, TWoz

BTW, Hogans Heroe's was a great show for its time. Used to love watching it, back in the day
