Can't find any DVD-R DL discs. Do they exist?

Hi all.

My standalone won't play DVD+R DL discs (althought I can author them on my PC).
I thought I'd try some DVD-R DL discs instead but I can't find them anywhere, either online or in shops.

Do they exist? It would seem as if they did - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD-R_DL but I can't find them.

1st: You do not want to use -R DL for dvd video, they were never designed for dvd video playback.

2nd: Are your +R DL being booktyped to DVD-ROM for better playback compatibility ?

Also, are you using a good brand of DL +R's ?

Or you could buy a good standalone dvd player.

Few dvd players play DL that you write yourself.....I think it's around 50%.

And the number that play DVD-R DL is probably 1%,use Verbatim DVD+R DL and ImgBurn.
There's no guarantee that DL will work on your DVD player,if compatibility is important use SL.

Take it from somebody who has used both +R and -R DVD DL discs that the -R DL discs just aren't worth the trouble. I bought 3 just for testing purposes and had playback problems on anything but a PC. I have no plans to ever buy any more. If you must use DVD -R DL, I need to warn you that the layer break MUST be set manually. If you burn with anything other than ImgBurn and don't set the layer break manually, you might as well throw your burns in the trash because the odds are they won't be playable. I generally don't tell people how to set the layer break manually for DVD -R DL because I believe so strongly that the format sucks that I don't want to help people to use it. If you do a good enough web search, you can eventually figure out how to do it yourself, but it's very difficult to find the information. I will say that the layer break is completely different from DVD +R DL discs. I got my Verbatin DVD -R DL discs from newegg.com.

I have a Pioneer 531hs standalone recorder that only records to -R so if there is a show or sporting event that may go 4 or 5 hours I will record to -R DL.
I have only done this a few times and have had no problem as long as I use a Verbatim disc t I also play the disc in the Pioneer

DL-R is problematic with video. As I understand it, the problem has to do with the way the layer break is handled. As evidence of this, Taiyo Yuden recently released DL-R media. But because of problems, they discontinued it.

I would avoid DL-R if compatbility is the issue.

My old DVD-ROM drives choke on both DL+R and DL-R even just for data, but at least if I write a DL+R with it bit-set to DVD-ROM, DL+R will work.
