Hi folks,
i'm currently in Japan and i need a dvd player that can play my region 4 (australian) discs, and all my other region discs too for that matter.
Generally this is easy as i could simply get a player and use a hack on it, but the problem is that the aussie discs are PAL and not NTSC. So since all the TV's sold in JP are NTSC only i need a player that outputs PAL into NTSC for colour viewing
I bought my australian region free player with me but i get the usual b+w display as it does not output a true ntsc conversion, so any help, ideas or websites would be greatly appreciated.
Ultimately i would like to try and get a JP tv that plays NTSC/PAL/SECAM signals (like most aussie tv's do) and just use my aussie dvd player but i think that idea will be cost prohibitive.
Cheers

Philips makes a lot of players that can convert between PAL and NTSC. Basically if you have a converting player, you need only configure the DVD player in its setup to output an NTSC signal. Maybe your problem with your DVD player is that you don't have it set to NTSC output. If you have it set to anything else, such as a setting of "ANY", this is wrong. The DVD player list here
https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers
can help you to find players than can convert between NTSC and PAL. Whatever you do, please do not buy a player with no research and just assume it can be "hacked". We've had a lot of posts recently from people who have done that very thing and then they find out that their player can't be changed into a multi-region player.
In summary, my advice is:
1) Check the TV output settings on your Australian DVD player first and be sure it's set to NTSC output.
2) If that doesn't fix your problem, go to a store and write down the model numbers of some players you like and then look them up in the link I gave you to see if they can convert between PAL and NTSC and only then buy one. -
jman,
thanks for that. I have already done as you have suggested and to no avail, the machine does not output a true ntsc signal so hence the b+w images....so no go on that front.
As far as JP models go i have not found any that can be hacked as of yet beleive it or not.
This may be because the Japanese simply use a different model number compared with the rest of the world (infact nearly all their electronics have different model numbers) so i need to do some more research.
Has anyone purchased a 'universal' player from world-import.com, i was looking at just buying a player from there and getting it shipped. that would solve a lot of problems. What online retailer do you guys recommend?
Cheers again
