  1. I was looking on Amazon and Shopping.com for HD DVR's and they don't seem to be there except for some Tivo-type stuff. What happened? Are they illegal now?

No, they're not illegal at all. Simplest explanation I can think of - people are going more towards the DVRs included in both their cable providers plans, as well as those with DirecTV (+Dish for that matter). Tivo seems pretty much dead, and maybe I wasn't paying much attention, but I don't recall any (serious) competitor to Tivo's units (aside from the aforementioned cable/sat boxes of course).

ps I don't think putting this in the DVD recorders section was the best choice, you'd probably have been better off putting it in the DTV/DVB/HDTV forum instead. Maybe you could request a mod move the thread over (if it might help that is).

Tivo/cable DVR/PC or HTPC recording on one side, and on the more normal consumer side most people don't care enough about the hard drive to pay the extra for it, so pretty much disappeared..

I'm surprised most or all of the firewire equipped models won't DVR to an external HD. Would be a great selling point and easy to do..

Lol cut and pasted from yesterday's post. This gets asked about every day now, they almost need to make a sticky. Basically can't compete with a $50 or so disc only recorder, very small number of people in the 'don't want Tivo, but willing to pay $200 for a recorder with a hard drive" group. Again though I can't believe someone doesn't make a simple Firewire out recorder so you can add your own HD if you want. May be some, but it's extremely hard to search on VH for it, so many reader only ones and it isn't broken out as a separate function. If anyone knows of one off hand, leave a post..
