Hello all, I'm glad i've found this forum!

I' ve done some reading about codecs comparison and i've decided to use x264 [or H.264] and XviD. Can u tell where i can find the latest versions of these codecs and how can i install them in my system?

    Thank you

Take a look in our 'Tools' section to the left under 'Codecs' and you should see at least one or two H264 codecs. They are usually kept updated and when you link to the codec sites, they may have some Beta versions available and more info aviailable.

H264 does take a lot of CPU power to encode and it can be fairly slow unless you have a fast system.

CoreAVC is one and I think Quicktime 7 and Nero Digital fall under that definition.

Wikipedia has some information on the codec and should have some links to more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264

    And welcome to our forums.

i've found the latest XviD codec installer here >> http://download.divxmovies.com/XviD-1.1.2-01112006.exe

my system uses an AMD 64 3000+, 1GB DDR, 6600GT AGP.

define a fast system for H264 encoding please.

Memory isn't all that important for video encoding since you only need to load a couple of frames at a time.

v1.1.2 isn't the latest for Xvid. The 1.2 branch is newer.
x264 isn't a codec. It is an encoder only and officially only offered as a library or a command line encoder.

That build is from the 25/02/2006.
My latest build is from 10/03/2007.

For encoding you don't need a codec. An encoder is fine. If you meant VfW, as I said the only official x264 encoders are the lib and the cli encoder. Not sure but DeahTheSheep is probably still offering VfW builds linked against current libs. Also as mentioned ffdshow offers x264 encoding (also decoding via libavcodec). At least from recollection encoding support was readded.

  13. One thing you need to remember is that once you go beyond Xvid or Divx you won't find a standalone player for your files.

I prefer to watch on the TV with a SA player and nice wireless remote.

    YMMV
