I already own the 111L and have it set up as master with 80 conductor cable. I now want to buy a second one and set it up as slave for back up. I read somewhere that the 111L would not perform correctly if set up as slave, is this true? If so please recommend a burner which would work well when configured in slave position. Thank you.

I doubt it would make any difference which one is Slave and which one is Master, as long as the jumpers are set properly for each. I never noticed any problems either way with DVD drives.

For some it may matter depending on their computer components. But I have a 112 & 111 set up as slave with no problems. Just make sure you use a flat 80 wire ide cable with the drive. And as redwudz mentioned set the jumpers correctly.

I have the Pio 111, just looked in the manual, it says to hook this drive up as master and any other drives as slave, obviously on the secondary channel. It doesn't say why, or what would happen if you hooked it up as slave....take it for what it's worth.
Personally, I don't see why it would make a difference, if anyone knows why it would be a bad idea to hook it up as a slave drive, I'd love to hear the reasoning behind it..
I have my Pio 111 hooked up as master w/ my NEC 3520 as slave. I've had two NEC drives, 1100A and 3520, they work very well in the slave position. Not sure about the newer ones though. -

I'd like to know if and how much a drive would slow down in these configurations.
If I have some time this weekend, I'll run a some 'unqualified' tests with SiSandra and a few spare DVDRW drives. -
Thanks guys, you have been a tremendous help as always.

Thought this might help with your input, below is a screen shot of primary showing dma6 (pioneer 111L) and second post shows slave at dma4 (plextor 708 will be replaced by pioneer 111L). Based on this info do you still think the second 111L I buy will run OK in the slave mode? Thanks again for all your help.

Both of your burners SHOULD be installed on the secondary IDE channel, as they seem to be looking at your screenshots. -
bbanderic thank you for the clarification, I learn something everyday about computers it seems, really appreciate your time and help.

It is written in the manual for a reason. The reason is to avoid known issues. Set up as master and it most likely should work. Anything else is up to you by testing.
