I have avi, mpg, mpeg, wmv, and mpg videos that I want to cut out part of the video. I tried easy video splitter and that program didn't work for me at all. Could someone recommend a program that is not too complicated?

    All all-in-one cutters are crap.

    Videoredo for mpg.
    Asfbin for wmv.
    Virtualdubmod for avi.

"Kind of old"? Last release will salubrate its first anniversary saturday. There simply is no better than VirtualDub for cutting AVI.

For this task, it hardly matters. Any version you'll find, will cut up AVI without problem. And they all run on XP

I use virtualdubmpeg2 for most (simple) video related tasks. It tends to keep pace with virtualdub itself much better than vdubmod. That said, I also keep vdobmod handy because it's audio facilities are much easier to use, especially when adding or working with multiple audio tracks. I am also using AviDmux more and more for simple things that I use to do in Virtualdub.

ok, so most of my vids are avis. So, the easiest program to cut a part of the video out is virtualdub right? Just trying to make sure I get this right. I'm not looking to perform any other editing so the rest doesn't matter. When I go to download virtualdub there is a list of builds to choose from. I have no idea which one to download.

Get the latest build labeled as "Stable".
VirtualDub may not be the "easiest", but certainly the best.

  10. If you just want to cut out certain parts, you could try Cut Assistant.

It is just a GUI for asfbin, virtualdub, avidemux or MP4Box, so you must download at least one of these too. It's simple to use, though. All cuts are effected without reencoding, so it's fast and without quality loss.

If you use VirtualDub V. 1.7 or later you can cut without reencoding even on non-keyframe positions, just activate "smart rendering" option and chose the appropriate codec. Same thing for wmv's with asfbin 1.5 or later, activate "recreate keyframe" option.
