here is the story, i'm from overseas but live in US, here at home, i have dish network and i can watch a channel from my country, which broadcasts the soccer championship games from overthere, last sunday i had to work and couldn't watch the game, but i do have a computer and broadband where i work so i wished i could have sent the tv feed over the internet and watch the game at work. (before somebody says that i should be working instead of watching games, i own the business). so the only thing i could do was to listening to the radio online, at the same moment i was chatting with so many people that was in the same situation, many of them live in parts of the world where they can't get the same channel i do at home.

so, all i want to do is find a way to hook up the cable from the dish network box to the computer, then with the right software send the signal over the internet so other can watch it, i was thinking maybe sopcast or one of those TVP2P programs.

I'm asking for your advice about what card to buy. something that will do the work the right way, consider that i'm not going to watch tv on the pc's monitor, i don't care if it has FM tuner or not, but i don't need it because i'm not a radio fan, i have 2 pc's at home, one is for my use, the second one is an old system that i mainly use for when family visits me so they don't touch my computer or to back-up my music and pictures and important files, but i think this pc is ok just for the purpose of sending the signal over the internet. price is not a problem, but i think since what i want to do doesn't required the greatest card, it might be a cheap one.

i also own a DV camera, and have some tapes that i would like to burn onto dvd's, i have done the process of transferring the video already on my HD, and i have done this using the usb connection, i don't know if owning a tv capture card or video capture card will be of any help (could it be faster???, the usb transfer is horribly slow).

so give me some ideas, if it is a discontinued product is ok, you can find anything on ebay.

thank you in advance for your replies!

yeah, i thought of that too.

not only slingbox but sony's locationfree products. but that will make it only available for me. and i want it to be available for anyone. thanks though.

by the way, i didn't mention it, but i would prefer some internal solution over external.

how about an ATI AIW radeon 9200??? are they any good?? somewhere else i read a bad review about ATI's card in general.

Make it available for anyone wouldn't be legal(or maybe in some countries...but not in my forum). You are only allowed to discuss how to stream/record/backup for personal use.

    i saw this coming.

i'm not asking you or anybody how to do it, or where to get the software.

i just want to have some advice about what card to buy and i don't think there is anything illegal on this last part.

but if it bothers you so much, i'm sorry, delete the entire thread if you want.

i read the entire RULES and AUP and i am not in violation of any of them.

sure...lots here use the ATI All-in-Wonder but I'd first research the cards in the top left menu...may be something better by now

Cards don't do what you want. Media servers do what you want and they get pricy in bandwidth charges.

"radeon 9200" is a display card.
Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

i don't think you are following me. i need a tv capture card (and not a regular display card or graphics card) to "capture" the signal, encode it somehow to make the "data" smaller and then send it over the internet.

    comprende?

    roger doger.

Dozens of capture cards (not ATI 9200) can capture, some encode as they capture. Next you need a media server. This will compress tighter (like WME9, quicktime or flash) and send streams through push (to server) or pull (from user player). If you want to send a few streams (limited by your ISP upload bandwidth*) then pull can work. If you want to send to many (more than your ISP upload bandwidth) then you talk $$$ to a media server provider and push your video there for distibution.

    * if you do much of this, expect a letter from your isp threatening an account cancellation and banning from future business. This can happen even if you stay inside the advertised upload spec and is more likely to happen if you are on cablemodem that uses neighborhood shared upload.

oh yeah yeah i know that, but it's alright, it will be once a week, for 1 hour and 45 min (or possibly more, but only a once-a-week thing, it's just for soccer fun dude )

encode as they capture??? i think that's what i need. not all the cards do that??

edDV, i have a general idea of how to do it, but let's not discuss that here because it's against the forum' rules. so let's pretend you didn't say anything about WME9 and so.

but hey! your help is so much appreciated! thank you.
