  1. I'm thinking of upgrading to one of the newer Asus mb's. I notice they have many different types of connections for hardware items and I'm wondering if anyone has noticed any performance difference when connecting their DVD writer to the single IDE connection on these boards.

Shouldn't be any difference. Many newer MBs have just 2 IDE channels to use for the optical drives. You would use SATA for your hard drives. Or you can add in a PCI IDE controller if you need more IDE channels. But many of the newer PCI-E motherboards only have 3 PCI slots available.

In a few more years, all optical drives may switch to SATA and there might not be any IDE channels left on the newest motherboards.

There's no difference with a single ide connection on the newer mobos. But reports have been made at Cdfreaks.com forums that some mobo controller chipsets don't work well with some SATA dvd burners. I bought a SAMSUNG 183L "SATA" dvd burner which works well with the BIOSTAR core2duo mobo that has the intel controller chipset. If you want to use a PCI CONTROLLER CARD to connect more than 2 dvd burners get one that has the ITE 8212 chipset. Here's a thread from Cdfreaks.com regarding PCI CONTROLLER CARDS for dvd burners.

ASUS has SATA burners. You would hope that an ASUS burner would work well with an ASUS MB

Be aware that sometimes even ITE 8212 PCI IDE cards will not work with CD/DVD burners, even after flashing the BIOS to the non RAID ATAPI bios.
As I've learned from bitter experience...

I've had far better success using the ITE chipset 8212 PCI CONTROLLER CARD than the SILICON IMAGE 680 chipset when it comes to connecting dvd burners. I've never had to flash the BIOS to the non raid adapti bios.
