  1. I just picked up a new Toshiba laptop with Vista. I am brand new to this beast. I installed TMPGEnc Plus and when I tried to run the program I got this error:

"Registry was not able to be initialized. User with administrator rights has to start TMPGEnc".

So is this some error message that Vista may display on older programs, or something totally different? Anyone seen this before? Thanks for any advice.

  2. I haven't seen this before because I don't use TMPGEnc Plus. You made a couple of suggestions for fixes, so I'll tell you how to do it. 8)

You could try right-clicking on the application you would like to run (TMPGEnc in this case) and selecting "Run as Administrator". That could cure it.

If you want to run a program in compatibility mode, right-click the application and select "Properties". Select the "Compatibility" tab and activate the checkbox for "Run this program in compatibility mode for:". Select the version of Windows you want it to run under, and click OK. That should make older applications work.

If running the program as admin works for you, follow the steps above for compatibility but instead of selecting an OS version, look further down and you'll see a checkbox for running it as admin automatically.

Hope this sorts the problem out!

  3. Run as admin worked. Thanks. I tried the XP compatibility mode trick before you replied and no luck. Have there ben any major problems so far running older programs on Vista? If so is there maybe a list or site dedicated to this?
