I think you need the japanese version of windvd 8. Or else try PowerDVD Ultra 7 or PowerDVD 6.5.

The standard American version of Windvd 8 won't play HD-DVD. You do need the Japanese one. In theory Windvd will eventually release a version in the rest of the world that will play HD-DVD, but your guess is as good as mine as to when that will be. PowerDVD 6.5 does support HD-DVD - I know that for a fact. I assume PowerDVD Ultra 7 will too.
They are capable of 1080p playback. You need a monitor that also supports it. My PC monitor only does 720p and I can tell from personal experience that 1080i or 1080p stuff sucks on my 3200+ AMD PC because it has to be scaled down to 720p and it's not very fast. If you play ripped HD-DVDs, people claim that it will play in 1080p. If you try to play from a disc, PowerDVD and Windvd apparently check to see if the signal is going out over HDMI (maybe DMI too - not sure though) and if not, they downgrade the signal to some resolution a little under 720p. This is supposedly why the first HD-DVD ripper was created. The author said that he was angry that his software degraded the image just because he didn't have a video card that supported HDMI. Output over DMI might possibly not be degraded for play from disc, but I have no way to test this. So in theory you should be able to play from your hard disc at 1080p if your monitor supports it. -
i got a 20inch widescreen monitor. i got a 7950gt hdcp.
my monitor is not hdcp , but my home tv is , thats where im gonna hook up the dvi out from the videocard -
