I cannot get the mpeg files to work in moviemaker from my sony vidoe cam. They play in windows media ok but only seem to laod the sound file into movie maker.
I need to find the codec that its says is missing
or find a good conversion programm to process the file pre moviemaker
or find an alternative editing suite that is like MM?
Hope someone can help as I am fairly new at this!

Use software that's made for editing MPEG, MM is not it. Not even close.
Cutterman, Womble , Ulead Video Studio and others. I'm sure someone else will have other suggestions.
Just a quick tip, you want to use software that doesn't reencode the video, The one's I mentioned above do not, they only reencode parts you have edited or changed. By doing that you maintain the original quality of the video.
