  1. Hi everyone. I just bought a new computer and it has a Philips DVD+/-RW DL burner (DVD 8801). I have been backing up my movies using single layer DVD's and Clone DVD (an old version, I'm not sure how to check which version) with AnyDVD running or DVD Fab Decrypter (I haven't updated this software for a while as the version I have usually works fine).

My question: Can I continue to use the same versions of Clone DVD or DVD Fab Decrypter to burn DL DVD's or do I require new/updated software? I tried to search on this and got way too many hits!

    Thanks in advance.

The layer break is the critical issue with DL media. Depending on which version of Clone DVD you have, dictates if it can PROPERLY insert the layer break correctly. I personally use Slysoft / Elaborate Bytes AG's Clone DVD 2.9.0.1 (payware) with ImgBurn 2.1.0.0 (freeware) and Verbatim +R DL printables without any problem so far. Earliest version of Clone DVD i can locate that starts support writing of +R DL is 2.4.5.4. One definate way off identifying your version is right clicking on the properties of the CloneDVD.exe or the CloneDVD2.exe where you installed it.

Thanks Dennis, now I know which version of Clone DVD I have--it's 1.1.7.1, so pretty old, but still backs up about 95% of DVD's when used with AnyDVD.

I will try ImgBurn as it seems to be well-received by this forum.

    Thanks!

Thanks also, bmiller! As stated above, I will try ImgBurn--does this software burn to DVD or just to the hard drive? I will check it out. Thanks!

If you have an existing video ts folder you have to build an iso with Imgburn. You have to select the best layer break from the offered selections, but there is always an obvious one to use. That only takes a few minutes. If you rip to iso with dvddecrypter, just burn with imgburn.Yes it burns to dvd.
After reading your first post again, burning won't be your biggest problem.Ripping to your hard drive using old versions of either anydvd,or dvdfab decrypter will not work for any newer movies.Updating weekly is necessary for backing up your newer dvd purchases.

Actually, ImgBurn has been able to burn a VIDEO_TS - AUDIO_TS structure directly by using "Build Mode", without the need for an ISO, since version 2,

After trimming out all unwanted material, I still have over 8.5G. So I ran thru Shrink at roughly 70% to get proper size, but when I try to burn with ImgBurn it gives an error, "Don't start crying, but there is no cell to create Layer Break" or something to that effect.

Will CopytoDVD automatically insert a layer break?

I even added a small commercial befoe the 120 minute break point thinking it would use that to create a layer break, but same error message.

    Thanks

I am using Verbatim +R double-layer DVD media. I still am getting the error about no cell available for layer brerak. I donwloaded VOBblanker but I didn't see anything about entering a layer break. After I download it I will do more searching.

    Thanks

    apprentice,

    Follow these steps:

    1) Open PgcEdit and select your project files.

    2) Proceed as if you're going to set the layer break. If you don't know how to do that...follow this guide.

    3) PgcEdit will pop up a messagebox telling you it can't find a suitable layer break. In that messagebox, look in the section that starts with "Note for expert users:". It will suggest which cell you should split. Write this information down, and close PgcEdit (without saving).

    4) Open VobBlanker, and select your project files.

    5) Locate the cell PgcEdit suggested, and click the "Split" button. A new window pops up where you can scroll the cell contents to where you want to split it. Click the "Mark" button to set the split point, and click the "OK" button.

    6) Close windows until you get back to the main VobBlanker screen. Select the directory where you want the new version of the dvd to go, and click the "Process" button. Let VobBlanker do its' work.

    7) Go back into ImgBurn. There will now be a layer break listed (the newly split cell). Select it, and burn like normal.

It may take a little work the first time you have to do this, but it's easy once you've done it a few times.
