  1. Hi,

I wanting to know how to stop pictures juddering after converting them.

I've used various 'converters' so far.

I'm wanting to convert to DVD (VOB) or atleast the best possible way to put my various videos on a DVD. The types of files I have got are AVI or DAT. The first AVI I converted to VOB had massive prolonged juddering, which was made 99% better when I changed from PAL 25fps to NTSC 23fps using Cucusoft AVI to DVD. But Cucusoft was no good for the second DAT video I converted because the audio cut out for 10 secs every 2mins. I then tried WinAVI but the audio was even worse. The 3rd and best converter I have used so far is ConvertXtoDVD, but a slight judder can still be seen on some frames, and a slight loss in picture quality (pixelation) from the original DAT or the extracted Mpeg.
ConvertXtoDVD confirmed that 35 frames had been duplicated and 12 frames where dropped, is this why the final product has the slight juddering, what if anything can be done to stop this?

I have tried using TMPGEnc DVD Author 2, but it was a none starter, as it doesn't like my variable bitrate Mpeg-1 files.

I've tried adding the Mpeg videos to DVD as data, but both my Sony and Panasonic DVD Players won't entertain it. My Sony DVD Player has played video clips burnt to DVD from a camera in the past so maybe it needs to be a different format to Mpeg? - Any ideas on this?

So, Whats the best way to get my AVI and DAT's etc. on DVD that my standalone will play without losing so much quality, juddering etc?

    Thank you so very much.

    Ron.

  3. I am playing them on my PC monitor, to check the quality before and after conversion.
What are the field settings? I'm using ConvertXtoDVD.

    Thanks.

Quality loss is pretty much unavoidable unless you are willing to use an external encoder, avisynth, and do it all by hand.

As for judder, ConvertXtoDVD is the best of the one-click-wonders for conversion because it at least uses pulldown when encoding 23.976 source material. However if you are converting 25 fps source to NTSC then again, unless you are willing to do it all by hand, duplication of frames and therefore some judder is inevitable.

  5. Guns1inger:

The source AVI was 23.976fps and 2.35 widescreen, so I even set these settings in ConvertXtoDVD (even though I could see the auto option had ofcourse made the right choices) just to be sure everything was done right. I even set the encoding quality to high and left it overnight. But it still sort of skips, or stops for a nano-second 'judders' on the close up, faster moving scenes, but it does it regularly.

I've been a member of this site since 2002 when I first started having a dabble with this stuff, and even though things seem to have improved as far as one-click options, I seem to remember giving up then for these and other sorts of problems.

Everything is perfect apart from this annoying Juddering.

Now considering I'm a newbie again, and I don't want to spend forever on one video, do you think AVISynth would be a viable option? I assume more can be found on this site?

    Thanks.

    Ron.
