What are the best programs for converting Avi/MPG/Whatever and DVD into Ipod-compatible Mp4?
When I say "Best", I mean as in the programs that will get me the best picture quality (and not just for the higher bitrates. I like my videos encoded in lower bitrates to keep filesize down). It does not matter if they cost money as long as they're really, really good.

Nero Recode...maybe not if you want 640x480 then read https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=313899 .
-
Maybe Womble MPEG Video Wizard DVD,
or TMPGEnc Express can do it.
Nice apps to look into anyway. The Devil`s always.....in the Details! -
my 5 cents...
i think videora ipod is more than good enough for the resolution you need at that screen size
best regards

You can try my 3gp_converter hack it's at http:// www.geocities.com/j.kint Most people like it.
-
When i use it i can't tell the difference between the dvd and my rip. And i watch it on a 32" panasonic HDTV. I'm gonna be sure to get AppleTV next month.

Hmmm... will he release any more profiles or allow us to customize the profiles on our own? Or can we do that by changing the Ini file?
-
Obviously the world hates me:
ERROR: Requested URL is not valid or cannot be found.
Dialog: And error has occured during the process. [Error:1]
Finished.
Edit: Hmm... for some reason, I'm not getting that error message for another file. Instead I got:
AtomicParsley error: can't open c:\Documents and Settings\Philip Wester\Desktop\12.M4V for reading: no such file or directory.
Which is weird considering I told it to save stuff to C:\Portable_Vids
I found the 1st file (the one with the "Requested file not valid" error) in my TEMP directory, though. -
It's an error in the movie profiles. I forgot to take some of the test code from those profiles...... sorry about that. if you open the ini file just remove the part of the text that says -chap (something).txt and save the file and it should be good to go. Sorry about that... Also the hack was just a dry run for a converter i'm currently working on a new encoding program called iConverter you can fide the GUI demo at jkintproductions.com I love to get input on my program so they can be made better.
-
OK, I'll try that out, thanks. Is there a way to customize the profiles? I wanna encode in 300, 400 and 500 kbps (for video) and 96 kbps for audio to keep file sizes down.
iConverter seems like a very nice program (will try it out once my file finished encoding in 3GP), but I would still like to be able to encode my files using lower birates :P. -
Well with bitrates that low your really gonna loose quality. What size file are you looking for? (half hour tv show)
I get around 150MB per episode some are bigger if it's a really detailed ep. -
Yeah, I don't mind SOME loss. I just wanna try it out to see what kind of loss I would get. If the loss is too great, I'll stick to 700.
I removed that line from the ini file, BTW (it was in there twice). Still the same error for the AVC QVGA TV profile. >_>' -
Just edit the bitrate setting in the ini. -b [num] is the "base" bitrate the others you should be able to figure out. don't change the max bitrate though
{edit}
Withc of the profies are you using for tv 4X3 of 16X9 both work for me just fine...... -
The AVC QVGA TV profile. The Hi-Res 4x3 Movie profile seems to be working fine for some reason, though.
And for reasons unknown pressing the "Browse" button for the Input File fields in iConverter does nothing o_o. My computer really dislikes me. -
None of the actuall functions in iConvetrter work it's just a gui demo. just to show the GUI nothing more.
Yeah part of it is auto adding them to iTunes that was put in for simplicity for uses. Just delete them from iTunes. it won't delete the original files. -
Aah, Ok. Good luck with it. Seems very nice as you've given Atomic Parsley an interface ^_^.
-
It's working perfectly! Just one question: Will there ever be any problems with audio sync using 3GP Converter? For example based on CBR vs. VBR or different frame rates.
Also, will 3GP encode .vob (DVD) files without problem?
The reason I want to remove the auto-addition to iTunes is because since my computer's iTunes is malfunctioning, everytime it fails to add a file to iTunes, it stops encoding, so I can't batch encode.
It'll try simply deleting Command 6. -
theres a program called jersterware dvdtoipod that is a trial version on this site...and it works excellent...the trial version displays a "evaluation version" message in the middle of the screen....it takes about 1 hour to encode from a video_ts folder...problems trying to do it right from a dvd...i use dvdencryptor to rip to video_ts folder....this program remarkably rips a dvd to video_ts in about 10 mins......so with these two programs it takes about 1 hr 15 mins. to rip a dvd and then code to mp4...hope that helps...

3: SPAM - The best video and movie converter for your iPod! -
Elecard Converter Studio
It has profiles for the ipod, both 320x240 and 640x480
demo is limited to 15000 frames
you will find some user feedback at

I don't know why, but no one ever mentions Dvdfab platinum. I know that most do not like one step programs but the IPOD profile works very well. I have been trying everything and either get errors which I can't figure out or non compliant files. just my Two cents

TmpgEnc Express 4.0.. Takes about 3 hours for a 2 hour movie, but the result is way better than I was able to get form of Videora or PQ DVD to Ipod. Clear not blocky. I tried nero recode - not as good clear.
Using Tmpeg to encode at 640x480 with VBR up to 2500 bps, yeilds terrific results. File size for two hour movie is usually around 1.8 Gig. -
