I'm looking at getting a set of Bose speakers. When it says that they are powered does that mean the speakers are amplified through the speaker system, or is it solely from the receiver. The speakers have a maximum output of 200 W, if my receiver only puts out 100 W is that all they will put out, or is the wattage controlled by the speaker system.

BOSE are overrated crap. .. or if i may rephrase... an EXCELLENT excercise in consumer brainwashing.

WATT is a measurement of power. Speakers do not 'output' watts.

To try and quickly answer your question if the speakers are "amplified" they have their own source of power. This typically is the subwoofer.

The max of 200W is peak ( the most power ) divided by the number of speakers. So if the system you were looking at were 2.1 (meaning 2 satellite / 1 sub) we'll allocate 80 to the sub and 60 each apeace to peak power handling to the satellites. A more realistic number is half of that.

Please do not confuse amp & speaker "watt" ratings with quality. My Harmon Kardon receiver is rated at what some would say very low -- 35 watt per channel. My Speakers have a 97dB @ 1watt/1meter sensitivity. This equates to LOUD !!!.

Have a look a a few reviews on the Logitech line of speakers. Cambridge Soundworks also make a nice range of speakers.

If they are powered, then they expect a very low input signal, like the 1/8" out on your PC's sound card.

Check out this Class-T amp for $20 that Audiophiles are flipping over.

SO, nice infact, that companies are removing the innards from the plastic shell and remounting the thing in polished aluminum cases!

Yeah, the BOSE stuff isn't bad, it is just overrated, like Monster Cable

Since you live in Canada, check out the Klipsch line of speakers. They are pretty friggin nice.
