I have an old Sony DCR TRV17.
I have tried to capture the data with windv type 1 avi, type 2 avi and also with Movie maker 2 AVI DV.
All work with no problem and quality is good.
Using Movie Maker I cant automatically index the file into clips I have to do it manually regardless of capture method. I edit the video dragging the clips to the timeline.
Playing back the the timeline is fine, but when I save the movie only the beginning of clips are recognized, not the end.
This means that if i capture 30 minutes of video and create a 10 second clip after the first minute, that the clip is in fact 29 minutes long! all clips will do this. The beginning is correct but the end is the end of the avi file, not the end of the clip.
If i take one of these clips and run the 'create clips' it scans the clip gets to 100% and then overruns 200% 300% etc.
If I capture using Movie maker High Quality NTSC, there is no problem, but the quality is not sufficient for my needs.
I guess this is some indexing issue, that movie maker has with the output from the camera.
This leaves me with two questions...
1. Is there an alternative method of capturing that will fix my problem
2. If not will a different editing software fix this.
I'm new to this and I thought this would be the easy bit! So far its driving me crazy.
Thanks in advance for any assistance. I have tried searching for others with this problem but so far haven't turned anything up.

In my case it doesnt. I get only one avi file ( perfect quality) from windv. I guess this suggests that something is wrong with the capture, or at least the indexing of the capture. Thanks for the pointer though, the more information the better to understand what is going on.
I tried loading the avi from i got from windv into avitodvd. I had to do a conversion to 'normal avi'. I then tried to edit this 'normal avi' with mm2 with exactly the same problem as in my original post. A clip end marker that does not work when saving the output. -
Regarding the indexing, is the original video recorded as DV? i.e., did you record it with the camcorder through the lens? The indexing works by looking at changes in the recording time and date.
If, for example, you recorded analog video onto DV, you won't get the changes in recording time and date.
Can you provide more information about the history of the video?John Miller -
Yep, the original video comes from a DV tape captured from the camera through firewire.
The file is about 5Gb for 30 minutes, the quality the same as on the camera.
The file is pretty much the same size when I capture from MM2 as DV AVI.
Its strange that I can happily edit the file, its just the output process ignores the end markers.
Even if I could get windv to split into scenes I doubt it will help too much. It would just push the same problem into each scene, though at least the end of a clip would be the end of a scene instead of the end of the tape.
Will a different editing program make any difference do you think? I will try the ulead trial and see, though I am not optomistic. -
Sorry, I didnt really answer the question, the video was all recorded through the lense into this camera (Sony DCR TRV17)
