This is a question I hope a service tech can answer. When you bring in, say a JVC VCR, for repair what exactly is done? Is the problem, if there is one, the only thing corrected or is it more like a refurbishing? What is the difference from repair and refurbish?

I purchased off eBay a JVC HR-S9600U. What the ad did not say is that it was a refurbished unit but that’s not my point. When I opened up the box I saw Styrofoam peanuts inside the unit where the tape goes in. I opened up the case and inside it was packed full of those.

After seeing that I decided to take it to a JVC Certified repair center to have them give it the once over before I started restoration work. Probably not necessary but I felt better knowing what I had after the check up. The owner had a packing company package the unit and they did not tape the door shut so when they blew in the peanuts it went right into the unit.

$104.00 later I received the unit back. What was done I asked. Cleaned and adjusted they said. (I had already cleaned out all the peanuts before I brought it in). I’m thinking what did that take, all of 10 minutes? I asked to talk to the tech that worked on that but that was a no go. It works perfect and probably did before that. But I have nothing to compare it against either.

What this all mean? Well I’d like to know is it worth it to have old units like the JVC 9000 series units checked out prior to using? And what is done in the repair shop.

    Thanks

It's worth it to have them aligned, cleaned, lubed and otherwise checked over every 2-3 years or so. Usually that runs about $60-70, at least it always has for me.

So not a bad investment, no. And the 9600 is a machine worth extending life on.
