I have the new Sony home unit recorder. The noise is that annoying whiny noise you hear when you turn on your recorder, and it starts loading, even if there is no DVD in tray.

Anyway, notice last few days at 3am this noise in my bedroom. But the recorder is off!

    any ideas appreciated.thanks.

Apart from bad joke, maybe handy has an idea.

If this is so, Handy, what can I do to check. And, then, why after having machine for two months, would this start?

Even when turned off the unit is still powered up.
Try unplugging the unit and see if the noise goes away.

My JVC DR-M100S DVD recorder does something similar daily at 6pm (it may also do it at 6am, but I am not close enough to hear it then). It has no TVGuide capability, so I am assuming it is resyncing the clock.

Ok, this is definitely occuring at exactly 2:51am every night waking me up. If it was during the day I could care less. I Could unplug unit every night, what a hassle. anyone have any idea how to solve this or what it is? thanks. Resynching the clock? what the heck is that. I've never heard of a device that has make huge noise in middle of the night at same exact time to make sure clock is ok.

Does your recorder get its clock information over the air from a local TV station?

Check in your setup menu for a parameter to disable auto setting of the unit's clock.

I think I said to you a long time ago that Sony was an over priced unit and they were preoccupied with CP
Now comes your concern with the thing coming to life in the wee hours
It's most likely the built in camera and audio that has been spying on you that now has decided to also bug you
    It's still watching

That's probably it. I suspect SONY thinks their customers can't tell time.

  16. 6 other units - worse than the Somy thats tormenting and driving you nuts.

    WOW

My Liteon units seem to behave and work OK. They only do what I tell them too do and when I turn them off the stay off and quite.
Someone on another site suggested un-plugging it, but being a Somy It may not allow tou to do that.

  17. My pannys let me turn off tvguide updating in the menu.

Isn't there something he could do like put rubber feet under the machine to make it more quiet?

LIte on were part of those 6. I tried two, and first one wouldn't eject DVD -- was very consumer friendly, but, I'm sorry, very cheap compared to the Sony. Sonys has lot flaws, but still the best unit I've found.

Ok Old, thanks! got first good nights sleep, knock on wood. we'll see what noises come back at 3am, hope it last

I have a LiteOn LW-5005. It has a PC type Lite-On drive and therefore ejects on demand only intermittantly. I tolerate it because it has not had any more serious idiosyncracies - like interfering with my sleep. It also seems to want to burn any of the DVD-R media that people give me without any complaint.

Perhaps your panny wants to know what time it is too.

My Pioneer clunks away DLing the TV guide at all hours of the day or night. But it's in the front room and I ignore it. If they had put a quieter drive in there, I never would have noticed. But I use the TV guide, so I live with it. If you unplug it or turn it off, it just waits until it's in standby again and does it all at once for an hour or two, it seems.

More along the line of 15-20, but yes, pretty much.
