Hello,
I have a Shuttle ST61G4
It has onboard graphics by way of ATI Radeon 9100
I bought a new card, MSI nvidia Geforce 9600GS 256Mb
I have not been able to play video (mpeg, DivX, XviD) since installing it. but I can play online videos that don't use Media Player.
I can't play video through quicktime, or start my webcam in Skype.
Last weekend I wiped windows, and did a clean install. Installed the latest nVidia drivers, and everything was fine after install ffdshow codecs, playing through Media Player Classic, and WMP
I completed the windows updates, and zonealarm, Nero, office . No I can't play any video again.
So what I tried today after reading various forums, without success
Uninstalled the nVidia card, used DrverCleaner 3.3 to remove all remanents, and installed latest ATI drivers for the onboard graphics. everything was fine, could play video again.
Uninstalled ATI drivers (again wiped everything clean) put back the nVidia card. installed drivers, no video.
my BIOS automatically detects the AGP slot card, so I can't disable the onboard graphics.
I didn't think it was a power supply issue as I could play video straight after my clean install of windows. The funny thing is that I can play video WITHOUT the nVidia drivers. I've tried different versions of drivers going back to June this year, each one properly uninstalled first.
I've even tried with the VLC player - nothing. Nero doesn't even play video. This includes DVDs. Below is a list of the software currently installed.
I am at my wits end!! Any help other than what I've already done would be much appreciated
Regards
Gareth

What you should do is a clean install again and test after each software install to see where you lose the ability to play videos, sounds like a software conflict with the nvidia drivers.
I think,therefore i am a hamster. -
Hi,
I've had exactly the same issue - I found when the Security Update for Windows Media Player 6.4 (KB925398) was installed that is when the problem starts.
If you got to add/remove progs is control panel, click the show updates box at the top, then remove this update, all will be fine
I'm sure there'll be a better solution in the future, but to watch your movies for now...
Cheers,
Pete. -
Just around the world once more ...
Why have you got "Microsoft Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility" installed ... if you dont know you had one installed ... it would have been obvious in the first place when you tried playing a dvd ... you have nero 7 ... why would you want more bs from ms being on the pc .
These will never get on any pc I own ... I hate this crap :
Microsoft Compression Client Pack 1.0 for Windows XP , contains a dll for vista ... so it stays out .
Windows Rights Management Client Backwards Compatibility SP2
Windows Rights Management Client with Service Pack 2
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB886903)
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0
Microsoft User-Mode Driver Framework Feature Pack 1.0
---------------
Some possible area's where issue's may have resulted in initial problem .
KB926239 , You install Microsoft Windows Media Player 10 on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP. A beta version of the Windows Media Format 11 runtime is already installed on this computer... idiots .... the old question of which came first ... the chicken or the egg ... in this case it was beta version issue .
KB904706 , directshow security issue ... check this one out .
KB912919 , odd issue with user's thumbnails disappearing ... someone else asked about this problem before .
KB921398 , possible to cause breaks in the shell shortcut menu
KB923414 , make sure the pc is free of trouble , trojans and alike before installing this .
KB923789 , securty patch for flash player .
KB900485 , sneaky little retard here ... genuine check twit .
KB908531 , what a real retard this is ... this could have been the initial point of contact ... your original problem ... nvidia involved .

KB911280 , screw's up dialup user's .
KB922582 , fix for problem with filter management may prevent updates from installing correctly .
KB885835 , this might be considered ... very important
KB886185:
After you set up Windows Firewall in Microsoft Windows XP
Service Pack 2 (SP2), you may discover that anyone on the Internet can
access resources on your computer when you use a dial-up connection to
connect to the Internet."
Not 100% true , they need to do alot more just too even attempt this , but it's possible .
KB890859 ... hello mr ms screwup ... this retard reset's restore point's count to 1 ... if crap got in before hand ... it's a clean reinstall all over again ... ms is a retard .
Tweak-XP Pro ... if you know the registry well , it's not needed .
-------------------
That be most ... some of the other's have been known to have possible issue's , but these are independant as to machine state prior too installing them .
-------------------
I am surprised microsoft has not had a world wide class action taken against them for the poor behaviour of certain updates reseting the restore point's to 1 only , causing those who do run into issue's later ... having to do a complete reinstall of not only their os , but all their software because the point of return nolonger exist's in the restore point's .
And another class action for the lame use of the restore point , which when activated , kill's all program's installed after the restore point was activated ... real idiots work for ms these day's ... they just dont think of the average user out there ... they "expect" you to know this stuff .
Yo ... ms ... we dont read minds you twits .
For me , that would be a pain in the flamin a** ... next time , ms in sydney will get a p***ed of customer at their door step .
I know too many case's where user's have been charge in excess of $200+ just too have the pc restored to "before" state ... user's should beable to reclaim this from microsoft .
Atleast I recover user's file's before hand ... other's dont even bother . -
I had the exacly the same trouble after upgrading to a new video card. I called the manufacturer and here's what they told me:
First, Find the latest driver for your motherboard's chipset.
If this doesn't work, flash your mobo's bios to the newest version.
and if this doesn't work, I was directed to use the 77.72 drivers from nvidia instead of the most current version.
For me, as soon as I updated the chipset drivers everything worked perfectly. Best of luck. -
If video was working before upgrade , I would avoid all contact with those recommending going any where near "bios flash" ... it's the last thing to do , and should be done with caution on a system that is working as per normal ... the card or the driver's should be sorted out first always , followed by possible os / software issue's .
Bad bios flash's can occur ... always read the fine print as to what the bios update fix's first .
