I bought Poseidon and went to make a backup copy of it. No problems for dvd decrypter, everything worked fine until I went to burn it. Because I don't want all the other crap that is on DVDs, I always just burn the movie, discarding subtitles, unwanted languages, menus, etc.
Usually this works fine, but this time when I went to play it the video was fine but the sound...What I got (besides the sound track) was a narration of all that was happening on the screen. For instance, when the 'Virtual Studios' logo comes up, the narration says 'Shafts of light shine out from the Virtual Studios logo"...at the very start of the movie when the hull appears underwater, the narration says "The Hull cuts through the water". The funniest bit was when the camera comes out of the water and moves along the side of the ship showing its name, the narration says" The name is painted on the side. It is Poseidon"
This sort of thing continues throughout the film (which, by the way, was a waste of money!), with the actual film soundtrack being quite low (in volume).
Burning another copy (from the same dvd decrypter files) that included eveything on the DVD did not produce this result (nor did it improve the movie!). Everything worked as if it was the original.
I have searched this forum for anything similar happening to any else without any success.
Does anyone have any idea what this is all about?

how do you strip menus and such? if you just play vob files you might get the wrong sound track.
-
Sounds like you included the sound track for the Visually Impaired. I've seen that in some TV movie channels. It is meant for blind people. You also do not say what you used to burn nor the mode you used decrypter. Did you do a movie only rip or a complete file rip?
My Sony DVD player allows me to toggle through any included sound track or Subs I may have included in the backup by simply pressing one of two buttons. So I can just click and geet the regular 5in1 Dolby or the Director's Comments etc. I only use DVD Shrink in Re-Author mode as this very clearly shows you what will be included or Excluded. You can use ANYDVD in tandem to defeat any new proteection scheme in newer titles. The down side is that ANyDVD will cost you $40 or so bucks. The up side,,, it works! Once I configure DVDSHrink to rip only the movie and one sound track, I backup to an ISO and burn that with DVDDecrypter in ISO burn mode or Image Burn. Results seem to always be perfect. No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD! -
From a review of the R4 Australian DVD:
This film includes two audio tracks, an English Dolby Digital 5.1 and an English Audio Descriptive Dolby Digital 2.0 surround track.
I think Baldrick got it right. wanderer51 is just playing vobs. If he did it right, as jtoolman2000 describes, he could play the DVD instead, and either choose the audio track (with the DD 5.1 being the default), or pick the right one to keep in the first place. -
Baldrick - Err...what I meant by stripping the menus was the one at the beginning that gives you the choice of "play movie"..."how we made this piece of crap"...."interview with cast" (as if I care!). All I want to do is watch the movie. I simply tell Clone DVD2 ("Copy 1 or more DVD titles"..this option removes the menus) to burn the movie files along with the English sound track. Works evey time...except for this time
jtoolman2000 - Hmmm...didn't know it had a soundtrack for the visually impaired. Nothing on the DVD case to indicate that, nor am I given the option anywhere to 'activate' that. Still, that does sound feasible and is probably correct.
As for DVD players..I have 2 connected to the TV...One is a very cheap unit bought at a Supermarket 2 years ago and plays anything you can throw at it. The other is an expensive LG DVD recorder which is fussy about what it plays. For instance, it doesn't seem to like anything I have made with my DV camera and proccessed using Pinnacle or Vegas.
Regarding DVD Decrypter, I did a full rip and used Clone DVD2 (v2.8.5.1) to burn it. As I have said, I have never had any problems before using this method. I am not really that big on having a 'movie library'. I have only bought and backed up 6 or 7. My main interest is taking and editing video, whether that be when we go overseas or around Australia or simply something local.
$40 is cheap for something that worksNo one could object to paying for software that delivers what it promises!
I only posted this query because I couldn't work out why this happened when it hasn't before and I didn't do anything differrent from what I normally do.
Thanks for your replies guys. Much appreciated. -
CloneDVD2 rips the wrong sound track then. Can you select tracks? then try select some other track. Or try use a different shrinker like dvd shrink and use it just keep the main movie and the english track.
-
If it was a decent movie I would be tempted to do it again..just so it wouldn't 'beat me'!
But....I think manono may have hit 'the nail on the head'!
Usually I select the 2 channel sound track as I don't have a surround sound system and simply play the audio through our stereo system (our TV is old and audio is only mono!!!)...In this case it appears that there wasn't a 2 channel (stereo) soundtrack.
The attached image shows the settings for CloneDVD2 that I used..and normally use!
Maybe it is time to upgrade things?
Once again guys...many thanks for your help/replies.

jtoolman2000 - Hmmm...didn't know it had a soundtrack for the visually impaired
As to your initial problem, it's very simple. One way or another you backed up the wrong sound track. No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD! -
You may not have a surround setup now, but it would never (or rarely) hurt to just always pick the 1st/surround soundtrack. Your DVD player would automatically downmix it to stereo anyway.
Scott
(edit: that would also future-proof you for if/when you later get a surround system, or if you happen to -heaven forbid- loan the backup to a friend who has surround) -
Further copies made to a RW confirmed everything. Selecting the ac3/6 soundtrack worked. Burning it with the track not selected produced the same results as the original.
Boy! Do I feel like a dill!
Thanks for all your help in clearing up this (self made) 'problem' guys and in future, I wll select the surround sound audio track
