I make lots of backup's of dvd movie rentals but often times
run into discs that are scratched.

The first thing I do before making a copy of any disc is to
clean it with rubbing alcohol and then use pledge no wax
dust cleaner to polish the disc.

I then use DVD Decryptor 3.5.4.0 and a Plextor PX-716A to rip
the disc to my hard drive.

With really scratched discs, DVD Decryptor will slow down to a read rate of 0.0 KB/s
and start giving read errors on the scratched portion of the dvd. As my
drive has ground to a halt, the errors increase up into the hundreds on the scratched (damaged) vob file. After a long time, (6 hours) of trying, DVD Decryptor gives up on
    the file.

I have also set the following options in the settings menu of DVD Decryptor
to skip over the errors on the scratched portions of the discs with no avail.

    I/O tab
software read error retries = 0
    Ignore read errors = checked

    Device tab
    Set read speed = checked
    Read speed = 1x
Enable Speed Read DVD (Plextor) = checked
Set hardware error retries = checked
    Hardware error retries = 0

What I am hoping to be able to do is either:
    1. Find a way to get DVD Decryptor to quickly skip the errors
    2. Use a tool like Sector Extractor v2.1 to rip the scratched (damaged) vob file on its own.
(I have googled all over and cannot find a copy of Sector Extractor v2.1 to download)
    3. Use another newer tool to rip the scratched (damaged) vob file.

I am not copying movies with the newer encryption that DVD Decrytor has trouble with
and I am not overly concerned with missing the small portion of the movie that is scratched.
I really just want to quickly get around the bad sectors of the vob file and continue to rip the movie.

    Can anyone help?

Try to use the IFO mode in DVD decrypter and uncheck chapters or cells that might be problematic...

    Thanks for the reply 422j3.

I do not want to skip the entire chapter of the movie (using IFO mode) that contains the damaged (scratched) portion of the disc if I do not have to. I want to keep as much of the movie as possible.

I am really looking for a way to identify and get around the sectors that are damaged quickly using one of the three methods in my post. (or another suggested method)

You could always buy the DVD instead doing illegal stuff.
