I have used Blockbuster and Hollywood Video for rental, but I primarially use NetFlix now. I rarely have any problem watching the videos, however I have noticed that every movie I rent does not have the useual design on the DVD as if I bought it. We recently rented a few and then also got the same ones for Christmas. All that to say, does Netflix has some special deal with the studios that they are making some special copies or are these DVDs a special pressing just for them?

  4. Alot of dvd studios produce two versions of the dvds, one for retail that has nice artwork on the dvds and a nice box, the other for rental that just have plain dvds and no boxes.

All of the rental places I have used, all use actual retail discs, I expect NetFlix is not any different. The one thing you may want to keep in mind, is that many movies have multiple releases/versions, often with different artwork.

Blockbuster has a string of promo ads at the beginning of each release. Netflix seems to stay true to the packaged product.

Several of the DVDs that I've rented from Netflix have been different than the the DVD that I buy - one that comes to mind is Wedding Crashers. I rented it and it had a plain silver matte top that had the movie title, the AR, the studio logo and running time and that was it. Then when I bought the movie it had a pic on it. And one movie I rented, The Philadelphia Experiment, it said "For Netflix rental only" on the top, along with the movie name, running time, etc.
