I have an MPEG-1 video file that should be about 2 hrs. long. However when I play it in WMP11 or MPC it thinks it is only about 1 minute long and playback stops after 1 min. If I skip around the file I can then play another minute and so on.

It seems that the file was encoded using TMPGEnc.

Something is obviously not right with this file.

Is there any tool that I can run this file through to fix its time length?

    thank you for your help

I tried running it through MPEG Corrector and still the exact same problem on the resulting file.

Btw, it seems that the video stops playing but the sound keeps on going in WMP11

Any ideas what could be wrong with this file? Do I need a different player or the file needs a fix?

I never had much luck with MPEG Corrector with a problematic MPEGs. First I would examine the file. Gspot 2.60 can give you some information. You could try VLC Media Player for playback as it uses it's own codecs, but that doesn't sound like a codec problem, just a corrupted file. But VLC can play some corrupted files that other players choke on. Worth a try.

As you have probably noticed, not a lot of MPEG repair programs out there.

Have you tried to work with it in a MPEG editor? Does TMPGEnc open it? If you can edit out the bad parts, you may be able to fix it, or re-encode it.

  4. Try using TMPGEnc's MPEG tools to demux and remux the file.

GSpot - what kind of information should I look for? Assume I don't know much about videos ... It seems to detect the true length of the file (2+ hrs.)

VLC, PowerDVD 6, iTunes 7 - play the file correctly.

WMP11, Winamp, MPC - stop after about 1 min.

TMPGEnc - trouble is that it seems the file was already originally encoded with TMPGEnc ver. 2.521.58.169 (according to GSpot) Do you think re-encoding it again with TMPGEnc will make a difference?

  6. Did you try a simple demux and remux with TMPGEnc's File -> MPEG Tools...? It will only take a few minutes.

  7. Or try the VideoReDo Trial Version utility called QuickStreamFix. Register the trial to get a trial key and it will work full function for a period of time.

I have found it,VRD, to be indespensible when working with Mpegs.
