I am just starting to learn the fundamentals of the encoding process. I am using 480X480 video&sound stream for practice and skill improvement. When I split the video portion and encode it, do I need to do the same to the audio stream? I am interested in a AC3 recode. What tool is used for this?
Afterwards it must be recombined, is this done in a dvd author program or standalone remuxer? I am currently trying out DVD-Lab

    Thanks in advance

I use TMPGEnc encoder and TMPGEnc DVD Author a lot. But I use the encoder just for the video. I convert the audio to 2 channel AC3 with ffmpeggui. Then when I author, I put in the converted MPEG video and the AC3 audio and let the authoring program mux them together. TDA accepts elemental audio and video streams, not all authoring programs do.

Usually my source is AVI type files, so I save out the audio with VirtualDub Mod as a WAV and use that with ffmpeggui.

But if your format is 480 X 480, that's a SVCD and different tools are used for the authoring part. Any reason you are making a SVCD? They use MPEG-1 Layer2 or MPEG2 Audio.

For DVD and SVCD specifications and formats, look to the upper left on this page under 'WHAT IS' .....

    And welcome to our forums.

Hi redwudz, thanks for your reply, got me out of a ditch. The reason I am using SVCD video is because I pulled it off my hacked Tivo unit.

If you have a lot of SVCD format files, you might look at a program like SVCD2DVD. It makes those types of conversions quite a bit easier and there is still a freeware version, SVCD2DVDMPG if you want to do the authoring yourself.

I have a bunch of SVCDs that I made before I got a DVD burner and it works fairly well with them.

  5. Check out the following program in tools: TyTool.
My brother-in-law uses it on his hacked Tivo and it's everything you need for editing and compiling DVDs from Tivo streams.
